Towards Zero Waste – progress update

University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust and North Bristol NHS Trust are currently undertaking a pro-innovation procurement project and engaging with the supply chain to deliver a transition towards zero waste. A series of market engagement activities have been conducted to explore and call for sustainable innovative solutions in hospitals.

A market sounding prospectus was published in January 2022 to assess the market readiness to offer innovative solutions that deliver the required outcomes for the Trusts’ ambitious sustainability goals related to waste management activities. This was followed by a supplier market consultation event in April 2022 which was well attended by representatives from the supply chain, supported by the NHS and NHS organisations.

To expand and explore in more detail the market sounding and market consultation event outcomes, the Trusts are now undertaking structured bilateral meetings with individual suppliers.

The feedback gathered will be utilised to inform a procurement tender strategy and specification fit for the future and for the upcoming waste management procurement later this year.
